A little bit about my history (the rebel)

I used to work for a large Australian Bank (nab), having joined them when I just started year 12. I stayed with them for 13 years until a mutual agreement seen me out the door. Upon reflection. although I wanted to leave about 6 years before I eventually did, I took on board some valuable lessons that I could use years later.

The best thing is that I met my wife through the bank.

Through various people I met over the years, I had a desire within me that wasn’t being fed. Trouble is, like most people I didn’t know what that was.

The Life for me after the bank:

I looked for a job after taking a holiday for some 3 months.

Then I stumbled upon a franchise that would teach me how to repair cars cosmetically, for mainly car dealers and (when I had time) the public. Things like:

  • Paint repairs to scuffed bumper bars
  • Stone chip repairs
  • Scratch repairs
  • Vinyl welding
  • Seat and carpet repairs to cigarette burn holes
  • Windscreen repairs
  • Pinstriping

So anyway, being a car fanatic, I thought wow, this has to be an omen (having just been knocked back for a bank job – I thought that’s all I could do).

So for the next 12 years I ran my own business. I didn’t want to get big and go national, it wasn’t that sort of business.

Things I discovered whilst running my own business:

You’d think I’d know a bit about how the real world works (the bank shields you a bit) – and if you were thinking that, well you’d be right.

I’m not saying that to brag or anything, it’s just that I’ve seen a lot, experienced a lot and gained a wealth of information – but I wasn’t aware of the following 3 things until I became self employed.

  • There are heaps of competitors in any industry that are all too willing to undercut you
  • The advertising formats encouraged by the papers do not work in a way for you to make money from them
  • Yellow pages advertising formats that the so called “experts” put together for you cause your customers to ring all your competitors to see if you have the best price. So you had better be efficient

I was frustrated because in the last 12 years I knew to get rich you have to work for yourself – yet I was only able to make an average living. The franchise income promised was overrated. Has this happened to you?

Just about everyone else was in the same boat as me, except for a fortunate few who had hardly any competitors.

I knew the internet was the way to make money

What I have learned about Copywriting:

Knowing that the internet was a big avenue to make money, I also didn’t know much about the marketing side of it.

In fact, I didn’t know much about computers until around the time when I bought my first one in the 1998 era, and started to teach myself.

Anyway, I discovered a little bit about things, setup a website or two and made – nothing! Yep zero zilch diddly squat. I wasn’t looking to really, I was pretty much happy that people could see my website and look at prior repairs before engaging my services.

Over the years I managed to learn quite a bit about the net and computers. Lots of information came to me from everywhere, much like a jigsaw puzzle. I attended a seminar or two as well.

The eventual point I got to, because of a very good company called the Internet Marketing Centre, was that I understood I needed a sales page, gateway page or whatever you want to call it. Some sort of page that was usually very long, yet people who were interested in that particular product, would read right through and buy the product.

As I had most everything down pat from a technical viewpoint, I knew I had to learn this.

Then as luck would have it, a good friend of mine sent me a link to a guy called Brett McFall. I’d never heard of him and didn’t know what copywriting was (I thought it was something to do with stuff you can never copy).

So now this website is a result of all that.
